"Northland had probably the worst oral health outcomes in the country," Dr Chamberlain told the committee. "The latest figures showed more than 65 per cent of Northland's 5-year-olds had tooth decay."

In order for councils to introduce fluoride to the water supply there needed to be a clear mandate from the community. A referendum was held on this issue by the Whangarei District Council in 2002 and 70 per cent of those who responded voted against it. In 2007 the Far North District Council began a two-year fluoridation trial in Kaikohe and Kaitaia. The trial did not continue after 2009 despite NDHB offering to fund it.

Whangarei dentist Lawrie Brett said introducing fluoride to the water supply would be a mistake. "All the research shows that it's not effective in reducing dental decay," Dr Brett said.

While most health professionals would agree with the DHB's stance on fluoride, more were going against it, he said.

WHY EAT LEGUMES?

As we age it becomes more important than ever to take care of our vital organs. The heart, liver and kidneys are given a hard time with today's lifestyle and way of eating. Many are on medications which all take their toll, the liver has to try and detoxify them and the end result filters through the kidneys daily. Sometimes just a simple change in diet a few days a week can make all the difference.  

 

Beans help keep the arteries clear from plaque buildup, maintain healthy blood pressure levels, and decrease the chances of cardiac arrest and stroke. In fact, studies show that having just one daily serving (about 3/4 cup cooked) of beans of any kind can help decrease chances of a heart attack and help balance “bad” LDL cholesterol.

 

Consuming beans has also been shown in animal studies to have protective benefits against cancer, in particular colon cancer, due to their high fiber content. Garbanzo (Chickpea) beans were demonstrated in research on mice to help stall cancerous cells from further forming. Because beans keep the digestive system, including the colon, free from harmful bacteria and toxic buildup, they create a healthier overall environment where pH levels are balanced, inflammation is reduced and therefore cancer cells cannot proliferate like they can in an unhealthy environment.

 

Chickpeas nutrition boasts high levels of iron, zinc, folate, phosphorus and B vitamins, all of which are especially important for vegetarians and vegans who may be lacking in these essential nutrients due to avoiding animal products. Chickpeas are also a great source of folate. 

 

Folate is important for helping the body effectively produce new cells, as it plays a role in copying and synthesizing DNA. It also helps the body utilize other B Vitamins in addition to protein (in the form of amino acids).

 

In Traditional Chinese Medicine Black foods, including black chickpeas and black beans as well as black seeds, are especially valued for their ability to support and nourish kidney and liver health. 

Too much protein can aggravate aging kidneys so try adding beans to your diet a few days a week.

 

ALWAYS soak beans/lentils in water which is changed at least once over 24hr period before cooking as it makes them more digestible and slow cook them. 

Delicious in tomato based dishes. After soaking keep them in the fridge and add to any casseroles, soups etc.

CHICKPEA BISCUITS

 

140gm    Chickpeat flour  

100gm Ground Almonds

100gm     Coconut

1 tsp Cardamom or Ginger

1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda

125gm Butter or coconut oil

3 Tbsps Maple Syrup (I use about 2 and good  pinch green Stevia)

1 tsp Vanilla

 

Oven 180 Fan bake or. 160 normal

 

Mix dry thoroughly and remove from TM

Melt Butter or oil in saucepan

Add Maple Syrup and vanilla may need another Tbsp moisture if only using 2 Tbsp Syrup

Blend gently

Form into balls put on tray and press down to flatten.

Bake around 15 mins

These are not overly sweet so can be used as a savoury as well

 

 

SPICES  FOR WINTER HEALTH

 

 

 

 

 

With winter not too far round the corner and especially for those like me, who 

refuse the Flu vaccine, help may be had by using organic non-irradiated spices.

 

SPICE TEA.      Use organic spices

 

  • 1 Tbsp    -  Ceylon Cinnamon Powder (Cinnamomum Verum) NOT C. Cassia or C. Burmanil)

  • 1 Tbsp    -  Ginger Powder

  • 1 Tbsp    -  Clove powder or freshly ground cloves even better

  • 2  tsp      -  Turmeric Powder

  • 1 tsp.      -  Cumin Powder

  • 1/4 tsp    -  Cayenne Peppe powder (or to taste)

  • 1/4 tsp    -  Black Pepper freshly ground

Mix thoroughly by putting in a jar and rotate untill thoroughly mixed

Keep clear glass in the dark or use brown glass jar

Put 1/8th to 1/4tsp into mug

Pour on boiling water or try coconut milk

Add honey and coconut oil to taste if liked

The delicious spicy taste is only surpassed by its health benefits.

I formulated this recipe when I had Viola Herbal Products Ltd  years ago and it was very popular.

I have since added Cumin and Black pepper to the mix .

Today more and more people are becoming aware of just how beneficial to our health non-irradiated organic spices are.

These spices are excellent anti-inflammatories, more and more research points to inflammation being

the start of the majority of diseases that afflict us today, from arthritis to cancers. 

Spices, like herbs can boost our immune system which is under pressure daily from the quality

of our water, air and food.

One lady wrote “The best alternative to tea and coffee I have ever found”

An enterprising guy used a teaspoon in each large pot of pumpkin soup and would get rave reviews.

Other Cinnamons  are half the price BUT contain significant amounts of coumarin which are not so

good for you.

If you cannot be assured it is Ceylon cinnamon then personally I would not purchase.

Joints, muscles and heart all may benefit from daily spice tea. Can be taken freely.
